This wooden bauble is made from part of a beech tree that had blown down a long time ago and was left on the ground. Over time the wood had started to spalt, this is when fungi colonise the wood and cause discolouration and produce dark lines in the grain of the wood. The spalting on this piece can be seen in the centre of the bauble where the timber is left bare. The bottom and top of the bauble are dyed black. I imagined it hanging on a Christmas tree while I was turning it on my lathe.
