8-11 Category • 2024Home Sweet Home! My entry for the This is Art 2024 competition is called Home Sweet Home. For some time now I have really enjoyed watching RTE’s production Home of the Year with my family. I am really interested in home and interior design and enjoy listening to Hugh’s commentary during each programme! When I have spare time at home, I enjoy drawing house designs and interior spaces. I also love watching Dermot Bannon’s programme Room to Improve so both inspired me to design and construct Home Sweet Home. Home Sweet Home is a modern, unique home made with the following materials: shoe boxes, paper, tin foil, egg cartons, lollypop sticks and posca markers. In the bottom right corner, is the Living Room. Most of the furniture is made with paper such as the couch, armchair, mat, table & book. The fireplace with shovel and the picture frame are made from lollypop sticks. Hanging from the ceiling is a Iight that I made from an egg carton. I spent two days constructing this room and it is one of my favourite rooms! Beside the living room you will find the bathroom. It has a shower with a heat setting and a drain below all made with paper. Next to it is the toilet. The bottom of the toilet is made from toilet roll inserts and the seat & flush are both made from paper. Beside the toilet there is a press with a sink both made of paper and above it is a mirror made with cling film. This room took about a day to create and it has what Hugh might describe as a minimalistic look!! Above the bathroom is a cosy bedroom. I used paper and toilet roll inserts to construct all the furniture. I spent two days working on this room and love the colour combinations. You can see a rocking horse and storage box to the right of the bedroom. You will notice a solar panel on the roof constructed with tin foil and lollypop sticks. This is an energy efficient home! Recyclable & reusable materials were used throughout the house. I really enjoyed making Home sweet Home and my favourite parts of the home are the paintings, the rug and the solar panels!
