Theme: I decided to make an imaginative self-portrait using torn and cut newspapers, calling it 'Breaking News'. I included my own interests and ideas and the environment, my dreams and hobbies by using newspaper and pictures. It is based on how we should be friendlier to the environment than we currently are in society and as individuals. We should enjoy helping the environment instead of destroying it. My facial features are supposed to look like cut and torn pieces of printed paper. On my head there are words both in Irish and English that represent what we should be thinking of and doing. The name ‘Breaking News’ represents how the newspaper is breaking around me and has meaning. Medium: The medium is mainly collage using mixed-media. This included acrylic paint, torn and cut newspaper, ink and pencil. Technique: I used a cubist technique for my collage and drawing. The jagged and angular shapes I drew represent the shape of torn and cut newspaper. I also made this shape around my own portrait, so all the shapes are uneven. Genre: The jagged and cut edges both around my portrait and in the shapes represent my feelings, ideas and hopes for the future for the environment I will live in.
