Our class artwork, St Brigid’s Cloak, was created with great love and joy by the pupils of Class Red, the youngest class in St Brigid’s Special School, made up of six amazing children aged 5–7 years. We were inspired by the theme “This Is Nature” and by our strong connection to our school, our patron Saint, and the world around us. Our infant pupils have been exploring trees and the natural environment, noticing their shapes, textures and colours. This learning inspired our choice to use paper to create St Brigid’s cloak, symbolising nature, growth and new beginnings. Just like trees, every piece of paper is different, yet together they form something beautiful. We have been learning about the colours of nature, from bright greens and blues to warm yellows and earthy tones. These colours are reflected in the vibrant paper chosen by the children to create St Brigid’s 3D cloak, bringing it to life and celebrating the beauty we see in the world around us. The children worked with great pride and determination, developing fine motor skills through cutting and sticking. They showed fantastic effort, creativity and confidence, especially during free cutting, and most importantly, had lots of fun creating something meaningful together. To accompany St Brigid and her cloak, we explored green rushes to create a St Brigid’s Cross. Through touching, bending and arranging the rushes, the children engaged in hands-on sensory learning while connecting with tradition and nature. The cross is especially meaningful to our school, as it is also the crest on our uniform, symbolising identity, belonging and pride. As St Brigid’s Special School, we felt inspired in the lead-up to St Brigid’s Day and the arrival of Spring to honour our special patron Saint of Ireland. This artwork reflects the love, care, creativity and sense of community that fill our school each day and captures the joy and pride of the youngest members of our St Brigid’s family.
