Our artwork is inspired by St Brigid, who our school is named after, and by her deep connection to nature, community, and creativity. To help shape our ideas, we visited St Brigid’s Shrine in Faughart, where the students were inspired by the peaceful atmosphere and beautiful natural surroundings. The visit gave everyone time to slow down, explore, and connect with the landscape in a meaningful way. All of our students have additional needs, and they especially love spending time outdoors. Being in nature helps them feel calm, curious, and engaged, so this visit became an important part of our creative process. While at the shrine, the students gathered natural materials such as moss, sticks, and stones, which were later used in our artwork. Everything the students used was made from natural materials, helping them feel closely connected to the land and to St Brigid’s story. Collecting these items allowed each student to take part and feel connected to the finished piece. St Brigid’s hair is represented using sheep’s wool kindly collected from a staff member’s farm, helping us connect our artwork to local life and tradition. In class, we made St Brigid crosses using reeds, spraying some of them gold to add warmth and light. The tulips symbolise spring, growth, and new beginnings, reflecting St Brigid’s association with renewal. The church in the background represents the church St Brigid built, reminding us of her lasting legacy and influence. This was a collaborative project where every student contributed in their own way, through gathering materials, creating crosses, or helping to build the scene. Through this piece, we celebrate St Brigid’s spirit while highlighting our students’ love of nature, hands-on learning, teamwork, and creative expression.
