I drew a bioluminescent jellyfish using oil pastels on black paper to explore the phenomenon of marine creatures that can produce their own light in the complete darkness of the deep ocean. The black background represents the vast, lightless depths of the sea, allowing the glowing blues, and soft neon tones of the jellyfish to stand out in strong contrast. Through layered colours and flowing pastel marks, I aimed to capture the jellyfish’s gentle movement and its natural ability to illuminate its surroundings. This self-generated light symbolises life, adaptation, and beauty in an otherwise dark and unknown environment. I want viewers to feel a sense of awe and curiosity, realising that even in total darkness, nature has its own hidden sources of light and wonder.
