Formations, No Two Alike

Inspired by the infinite variety found in nature, our Second Year Art students explored form, texture, and colour through a contemporary lens, transforming discarded and recycled materials into vibrant sculptural assemblages. Each student responded to the same brief, yet no two sculptures are alike. Just as no two leaves, snowflakes, or human beings are the same, these works celebrate difference, unpredictability, and the beauty of individuality. Constructed from repurposed objects, each sculpture began as an exploration of balance, weight, and form. Students assembled their structures intuitively, turning everyday waste into something expressive. These forms were then coated in mod roc to build texture and strength, before being “painted” with layers of translucent tissue paper. Like stained glass catching the light, small squares of colour brought each piece to life, creating energy, depth, and luminosity. In reimagining discarded materials, students not only gave them new purpose, but reflected the regenerative power of nature itself. This collection celebrates nature not as a static landscape, but as a dynamic living force, full of play, variety, mystery, and resilience. The sculptures seem almost to have grown organically, each one blooming into its own shape and voice. Together, these wildly different forms become a forest of creations, echoing the rich biodiversity of the world outside our window. We were inspired by David Attenborough, who reminds us: “It seems to me that the natural world is the greatest source of excitement; the greatest source of visual beauty...” The Art Room became that world, full of colour, chaos, invention, and life. We hope viewers feel the same joy and curiosity that nature gives us. Through these pieces, we wanted to say: this is nature — as seen through the minds of young artists: bold, curious, and unrepeatable.
