"Unmask" is a freehand crochet piece composed of acrylic yarn. The background of the piece is entirely made from 2 large crochet panels and a variety of crochet appliqués and embroidery creates the imagery on top. The centerpiece of the work is a beige, theatre style mask with a happy expression .The artwork shows the sky in various stages of the day and a meadow full of flowers. The size is approximately 67 centimeters in height, 50 centimetres in width and 2 centimetres in depth. The artwork was inspired by what nature means for me as a neurodivergent person. The almost overwhelming number of details and colours reflects my perception of nature, while the dropped mask represents the ability to unmask and simply be without the pressure of constantly being perceived. I chose crochet as my medium because it resembles natural structures and textures such as moss and flowers. Additionally, crochet about connection between stitches, reflecting the interconnection of the natural environment. The artwork appears uneven and disorganised, further demonstrating my neurodivergent perception of nature. This artwork invites the viewer to think about the brightness of nature, how it appears disorganised but perfect at once and how each person might perceive it differently.
