I did this to explore the theme ‘This is Nature.’ Firstly, I was inspired by my local area, our GAA club is named the Cu Chulainn’s after one of the greatest mythological legends in Ireland. Cu Chulainn which translates to “Hound of Culann” gained his name after he killed a vicious hound by driving his hurling ball straight down the beast’s throat with his hurley stick. This myth is the inspiration for my piece. Irish mythology is around us always and it is what helps us connect to nature, so I really wanted to capture this in my sculpture. Secondly, by using papier mache, I aimed to capture the spirt of the wolf while also emphasising the importance of sustainability and reusing materials, I believe the only way to preserve our habitat is by being conscious of the materials we use and how they may affect the environment, so I really wanted to highlight that. Although I am not completely satisfied with the result, this competition pushed me to experiment with new techniques and materials, allowing me to grow as an artist. Through my work, I hope to highlight the connection between nature and the environment, reminding us to respect and protect the world around us, while also celebrating the versions of Irish culture we see around us every day,
